What’s happening now

  • Alberta has 56 new cases of COVID-19, Premier Jason Kenney announced today. The province’s total number of cases is 542; 33 Albertans have recovered from the virus. He also announced further restrictions: the maximum size for gatherings is now reduced to 15 and all non-essential businesses must close; restaurants are still allowed to be open for takeout.
  • He also announced that no one will be evicted April 1 for non-payment of rent, a rent freeze while Alberta is under a state of public health emergency, suspending late fees for missed rent and that landlords will be obliged to negotiate with renters on payment plans.
  • The City of Calgary orders the closure of ‘personal care’ services, non-medical services, all playgrounds (previously only city-owned playgrounds were shuttered) and skate parks, and prohibits organized and team sports on public fields.
  • A Calgary Subway has pulled a promotion that saw customers get a face mask with the purchase of two subs.
  • The federal government is rolling out a suite of programs for small- and medium-sized businesses including 75% wage subsidies, $40K loans.
  • Premier Jason Kenney announced on Wednesday that peace and police officers will be able to issue fines of up to $1,000 to those violating public health orders, including those not adhering to self-isolation if they have been in contact with a confirmed case, are diagnosed with COVID-19 or are exhibiting symptoms. Courts will be able to fine up to $100,000 on the first offence and $500,000 for additional offences.
  • Albertans experiencing a loss of income from self-isolation can now apply for provincial benefits online.
  • The federal government has announced a new strategy that will see Canadians get $2,000 per month for the next four months.

Latest cancellations and closures

  • The City of Calgary is limiting access to its Plus 15 network, and closing the network on weekends. More details here.
  • All non-essential businesses are to close in Alberta (restaurants will still be open for takeout).
  • All Calgary playgrounds and skateparks are closed.
  • The University of Calgary has postponed Spring Convocation until November 2020.
  • Parks Canada closed parks to visitor traffic Wednesday; vehicle traffic to provincial parks now restricted.
  • Canmore is posting signs at the entrances to the town to discourage visitors.
  • All Grade 6 and 9 provincial achievement tests and Grade 12 diploma exams are cancelled.
  • Calgary Transit is reducing frequency of trains and buses due to decreased demand.
